GROWTH TIPS
From College Dropout to King of Stoicism
Ryan Holiday spent years doing all kinds of things before publishing his first book about Stoicism. He started out taking big risks, trying new things, and sharing what he learned along the way.
I dropped out of college to be a research assistant to an author. I worked a desk at a talent agency in Beverly Hills. I’ve started multiple businesses. The best lessons—things I wish I’d been told here: ryanholiday.net/37-pieces-of-c…

Now, he’s built a multi-million dollar business by making ancient philosophy cool. What can solo creators learn from his path?
Ryan didn’t set out to “own” Stoicism. He wrote a single blog post (“Stoicism 101”) that went viral, then paid attention when it resonated. Over time, he leaned in, writing books, launching podcasts, and building products around the niche.
Post every day, even if it feels small. The more you publish, the more you expand your “luck surface”—increasing the chances your next idea hits.
"The amount of serendipity that will occur in your life, your Luck Surface Area, is directly proportional to the degree to which you do something you’re passionate about combined with the total number of people to whom this is effectively communicated." – Jason Roberts

Start by sharing ideas online—threads, newsletters, blog posts. When something gets a reaction, don’t ignore it.
👉 Hypefury makes it easy to stay consistent, cross-post, and maximize your views.
2. Do Interesting Sh*t
You can dream about making money as a creator, but if you want your content to be original and matter, you need real-world experience.
The best way to get it is to build new projects or join interesting ones started by others.
Ryan could have cashed in on a quick book deal, but he chose to work for a wild company (American Apparel) and helped launch books for big names. He put himself in the middle of the action, learning by doing.
"When I was starting out, I got a really good piece of advice. An author told me: If you want to be a great writer, go live an interesting life."

Don’t be afraid to gain real-life experience by getting your hands dirty.
3. Test in Public and Build on Every Win
Ryan tested his ideas with blog posts and articles, seeing what sparked reader response. He didn’t pitch his “life’s work” cold—he built up from viral proof.
Turn small wins into bigger ones. Got a tweet that gets replies? Turn it into a thread.
If your thread sparks DM questions, answer them publicly as a newsletter issue.
Did a newsletter get above-average replies? Turn it into a free workshop or a YouTube explainer.
If a workshop goes well, build a paid guide, a mini-course, or even a new product line.
Every win—no matter how small—can be the seed for something bigger. Use your audience’s feedback to decide which ideas to level up and where to invest more effort.
Though we think big, we must act and live small in order to accomplish what we seek...one foot in front of the other, learning and growing and putting in the time.
