Riding a trend is key to success—fighting against it is a sure path to failure.
But betting on a trend or cutting-edge tech alone won't guarantee success. This is the story behind Artifact's failure.
From it, Mike extracted a few important lessons:
Your product must solve real problems immediately, not after months of setup.
Keeping a product in private beta for years will hamper your momentum.
Quality isn't enough. Your product must deliver clear, immediate utility.
You can follow all these 'rules,' but you'll only know if you're on the right track once you launch. And even then, the answer might not be immediate.
That uncertainty is exactly why the ability to kill what's not working isn’t just another skill—it’s the most important one. If you don’t get this right, everything else falls apart.
Make a list of ideas you'd feel silly not trying
Pick the top three, implement them, then ask: "Did it change the trajectory?"
If not, it's time to move on
You can always test more ideas, but if your top three didn't work, you're probably focusing on the wrong thing and will quickly lose motivation.
Staying consistent is important, but it's easier when you're excited about what you're building.
